Named for an early and influential settler in the New Mexican territory, Oliver Lee Memorial State Park occupies a dramatic place in the Sacramento Mountains a short distance south of Alamogordo at the mouth of Dog Canyon. Lee’s 19th century ranch house has been restored and furnished with period pieces. A trail along Dog Canyon takes hikers to an oasis of pools under cottonwood trees. The Dog Canyon Recreational Trail climbs to an elevation that delivers striking views of the Tularosa Basin to the west and the Organ Mountains to the south. The park offers plenty of opportunities for hiking, camping, picnics and wildlife sightings.
